GrainGrowers welcomes the opportunity to provide feedback on the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s (NHVR) Draft Heavy Vehicle Productivity Plan (2024-2029).
Improved heavy vehicles regulation has the potential to significantly enhance both the safety and productivity of grain freight.
Road regulation is a key pillar of GrainGrowers' National Grain Freight Strategy, which provides a practical road map for government to ensure Australia’s global competitiveness.
Agricultural machinery and heavy vehicles are at the heart of grain production. Grain is sown and harvested using oversize agricultural machinery such as tractors and harvesters. Once harvested, all grain is then moved via truck from the farm gate to its next destination, whether that be for export or the domestic market.
According to CSIRO TranSIT modelling, transport costs the grain industry $2.1 billion annually, representing the largest single cost in grain production. Improving heavy vehicle efficiency therefore presents a critical opportunity to reduce costs, enhance the global competitiveness of Australian grain, and deliver savings for growers.
