The APVMA has issued a minor use permit allowing the late season application of glyphosate on feed barley which will expire 30 April 2020.
Important technical info:
- The permit is for specific formulations of glyphosate for the “Pre-Harvest Desiccation and Spray Topping of Weeds in Specified Barley (except malting barley)”.
- The permit [PER82594 (v2)] expires 30 April 2020.
The decision by the APVMA extends the original permit issued 2 Nov 2016 allowing for the late-season glyphosate application on feed barley. This means grain producers and traders are able to put in place appropriate plans for the upcoming 2019/20 harvest. GrainGrowers commends Grain Producers Australia for their efforts in seeking an extension of this permit.
Producers are reminded of the importance of stewardship of pesticide products, including glyphosate. The conditions of use, directions and restraints of the permit must be followed. Growers are also reminded that declarations of use may also be required and complied with as directed by buyers and traders.
In July 2019, the GrainGrowers National Policy Group (NPG) discussed the expiry of the glyphosate minor-use permit for barley. The NPG agreed to support the implementation of a permanent label for late-season application of glyphosate on feed barley.
The APVMA is also reviewing an application to establish a permanent label allowing late season use of glyphosate on barley that would do away with the need for short-term permits.
