Commonwealth Update

Government is focusing on outcomes from the Jobs and Skills Summit and other workforce priorities. Australia’s National Biosecurity Strategy was recently launch as well as recent changes to Biosecurity laws. Australia’s Maritime Logistics System is also being reviewed by the Productivity Commission. The Government is also aware of issues with road and infrastructure maintenance and is doing all they can under the current circumstances, noting impacts are widespread.

Season Update from State Farming Organisations

Grains industry representative bodies (AgForce Queensland, NSW Farmers, VFF, GPSA, WAF) provided an update from their states. Comments were made on the size of the upcoming crop to be harvested, stating that another record crop will put strain on the grains supply chain logistical network both in terms of infrastructure and workforce.

In the East Coast, wet conditions have significantly impacted operations, with both summer crop planting and winter crop harvest being delayed due to the weather. Wet conditions across Australia have heightened pest and disease pressure and costs associated with management plans.

Representatives also raised grower concern surrounding fertiliser and chemical availability for the coming season, and concerns regarding capacity with the volume of grain carried over from the previous season and what that means for grain pricing.

Update from bulk handlers

An operational update was shared from GrainCorp, Viterra and CBH, noting efforts to ensure a smooth harvest given both weather and the expected size of the harvest. Road, rail and shipping freight constraints were raised, particularly on the East Coast where high rainfall and flood has been impacting daily operations and causing damage to infrastructure. Growers, contractors and drivers are reminded to keep safety first during this upcoming harvest.

Update from key input retailers

Input providers gave an update on the current state of the supply chain. Main topics raised were supply chain constraints and pricing of materials, noting impacts from overseas supply shortages and rising energy prices in the EU. However, the participants were confident about meeting domestic demand for the upcoming season.

Information was also provided on mouse and snail bait availability, noting they are expecting high pest pressure following the wet seasonal conditions and urge growers to keep an eye on the situation on the ground and be proactive following harvest to avoid plague pest populations to develop. Provided further update on supply chain constraints, noting raw materials pricing may be affected by overseas energy shortages and the AUD/USD exchange rate.

Update from Grains Australia

Grains Australia held their AGM in October heading into 2 years of operation, with the new strategic plan being released and noting the incorporation of Barley Australia this year. Ensuring the classification system is part of the process is very important. Oat and Barley councils established, with barley being a continuity of the Barley Australia board. These councils will provide strategic direction for Grains Australia in their respective space.

On market access, information and technology, Grains Australia continues to work closely with AEGIC and others to advanced market access priorities, performing advocacy and activities to ensure Australia develops better partnerships.
