Last week, GrainGrowers attended the Farm Writers’ Association of NSW February lunch in Sydney, featuring guest speaker Dennis Voznesenski, Agricultural Economist – CBA, and author of War and wheat: navigating markets during global conflict.
Throughout the event, Dennis provided great insight into how global conflicts and economic policies can impact Australian grain growers, traders and markets. Dennis spoke to the learnings of his lengthy historical research into both World Wars and the impacts they had on the Australian grain trade, which have led to the elaborate domestic and international supply chains we know today. Dennis further mentioned the importance of learning from our past to ensure the Australian grains industry can prepare for an increasingly uncertain future.
Following on from audience questions, one of the key discussions held revolved around Australia’s self-reliance and its ability to withstand future ‘black swan’ events, with the example of fuel self‑sufficiency and domestic biofuel production being raised.
GrainGrowers proudly supported the launch of War and Wheat in Sydney late last year. War and Wheat explores how future conflicts can significantly impact markets, farmers, grain merchants, food manufactures and governments – prompting an important conversation about national security and providing solutions to Australia’s vulnerabilities.
GrainGrowers would like to thank Farm Writers’ Association of NSW for hosting such a fantastic event, and Dennis for providing valuable insights on the day. It was a great opportunity for GrainGrowers’ attendees to network with industry members and learn more about how global politics can impact the future of the Australian grains industry.
