The government response on the future structure and governance arrangements for the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) reinforce the vital role of an independent regulatory authority, GrainGrowers said today.
GrainGrowers CEO Shona Gawel said the commitment publicly to ensuring the APVMA is a capable, high performing agency operating independently of government is welcomed by industry.
“The current APVMA reviews highlight the need for independence to ensure decisions robustly consider all the relevant available information, and Australia’s unique circumstances, before final decisions are made.”
Ms Gawel said Australia represents a small market for agriculture chemicals and pesticides.
“Given the need for innovation in our farming systems to maintain profitability, it is vital that our regulatory system is predictable and efficient, to allow new products to be brought to market.”
“We look forward to continuing to work across government to ensure the regulatory system delivers certainty for chemical users and builds public confidence in the broader issues of chemical and food safety,” she said.
