On International Women’s Day 2023, GrainGrowers is celebrating the achievements of women in the grains industry around Australia.

At a senior management, national policy group and board level, female representation is strong and harnesses the contribution and voice women bring to grain growing across the country.

“In all aspects of our work, we encourage diversity, equity and inclusion, and a valuable part of this is reducing barriers and enhancing opportunities for female members to get involved in key decision-making groups,” said GrainGrowers Chair, Rhys Turton.

“It is all about bringing together the best talent possible to achieve outcomes for the Australian grains industry.”

“The value in this approach speaks for itself, with GrainGrowers harnessing the skills of women throughout the organisation – from our newly appointed CEO, Shona Gawel, through a range of senior and support staff, and on our Board and National Policy Group.”

Mr Turton said he was very pleased to see Ms Gawel acknowledged publicly in a list of 20 women influencing Australian agriculture.

“While this is a testament to her strong leadership skills and industry knowledge, it’s also important to have capable women role models stepping forward in increasing numbers to have their voices heard within the industry.”

“GrainGrowers is committed to maintaining a supportive and inclusive approach to encourage a new generation of industry participants to step forward and contribute to the future development of the industry.”

“On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the grains industry has a lot to celebrate and values greatly the contribution and the voice women make to grain growing across Australia. They are the strength of our industry.

Mr Turton said GrainGrowers was looking to lead the industry to transform culturally and extinguish unconscious bias and sexism across all its activities.
