Wheat Quality Australia (WQA) Varieties for Removal 2021
Every year, WQA reviews The Wheat Variety Master List which contains the names of all varieties approved by the classification process by class and zone. The review process extends to "old varieties", or those classified more than 10 years ago and assesses receival volume.
Old varieties comprising 0.1% or more of receivals in any zone are retained on the Master List provided there are no quality issues. Old varieties comprising less than 0.1% of deliveries and approved for removal can be delivered into the approved class for a further two years. After this time grain from these varieties will be received as "FEED".
This process takes place even if there are no particular quality issues with a variety for a number of reasons. Those listed for removal are a small percentage of Australian grown wheat. By updating this list, the quality and competitiveness of Australian wheat classes can be directly aligned with end use market requirements, making it more attractive for customers.
These varieties were classified over 10 years ago and are no longer referenced in any state, industry or GRDC sowing guide. They have been replaced by new varieties that have better agronomic, yield and quality characteristics.
