MEDIA RELEASE

7 June 2022

Leading industry body GrainGrowers welcomes Prime Minister Albanese’s recent visit to Indonesia and is hopeful that there were also productive conversations around the realisation of mutual opportunities with the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership. Indonesia is Australia’s largest wheat market, accounting for 19% of our wheat exports.

“Prime Minister Albanese’s visit to Indonesia is a demonstration of the importance of our bilateral relationship. There are some opportunities within IA-CEPA that are yet to be realised and we are hopeful that with the Prime Minister’s recent visit, the important relationship between our two countries will be strengthened and these will come into effect.” said Brett Hosking, GrainGrowers Chair.

Australian wheat purchased by Indonesia is predominately for human consumption but there are also opportunities that exist with feed grain markets. IA-CEPA also included a focus on industry partnerships and the introduction of a 500,000-tonne duty free quota of Australian feed grain (wheat, sorghum, and barley) increasing at 5% per annum.

“IA-CEPA which came into force in 2020 has been impacted significantly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are excited by the Prime Minister’s visit and looking to re-energising the relationship between our growers and our colleagues in Indonesia.” said Hosking.
