GrainGrowers has opened applications for its 2020 Australian Grain Leaders Program (AGLP) and farmer and farm business consultant Chris Warrick from Horsham, Victoria looks back fondly on his experience taking part.

“I completed the AGLP in 2010 and the most memorable thing for me was learning about my own and other people’s personality traits, as well as the skills to work well with other people.” said Chris, who in addition to running his farm and own consultant business, manages the GRDC’s National Grain Storage Extension Project.

Chris was not in a leadership position when he started the AGLP but believes the experience gained from the project helped set him on the right career path.

“AGLP gave me skills I could apply straight away, and when I progressed into a leadership role, I had the confidence and understanding of how to be an effective leader” said Chris.

GrainGrowers developed the AGLP to help growers develop their own brand identity and values as well as how to communicate more clearly and with influence. The program also helps growers build their personal network.

Chris made lasting friendships that he can still turn to for advice. “The networking component was great for me. To rub shoulders with people in different parts of the agriculture industry that I could ring anytime for guidance and advice has been invaluable.”

GrainGrowers Chairman Brett Hosking is also an alumnus of the program.

“When you are working on farm but would like to make a broader contribution to this great industry, the opportunity to access a program that has been tailored for your industry is invaluable,” Brett said. “Taking part in AGLP helped shape my journey as a leader. I urge people in the grains industry who want to broaden their skills to apply.”

The program is available to anyone aged 21-40 that are actively involved in the grain industry. Applications are now open for the 2020 program, which runs for 12 months with 3 face-to-face elements as well as one-on-one phone sessions with a mentor. Applications close 30 September.
