Wholemeal Date Scones

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups wholemeal self-raising flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 125g dates
  • 30g butter
  • 1 tablespoon golden syrup
  • ½ cup boiling water
  • 1 egg
  • milk for glazing

Method:
  1. Sift flour and salt into bowl and stir in finely chopped dates. Add butter and golden syrup to boiling water and stir until butter melts. Add to flour mixture with a slightly beaten egg and mix into a soft dough.
  2. Knead slightly and roll dough out to 2cm thickness and cut with a scone cutter. Put onto a lightly greased tray and glaze the tops with milk.
  3. Bake in oven at 200oC (180oC fan-forced) for 10-20 minutes

Plain Scones
Ingredients:
  • 3 cups self-raising flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ cup cream
  • 1 ½ cups milk (or more cream & less milk)
Method:
  1. Sift dry ingredients into bowl and make a well in the flour and pour the cream then add milk, stirring with a knife
  2. Knead it a little
  3. Place into a baking dish and push scones close together 4. Bake for 8 minutes 250o C (220o C fan-forced)
